De Federatie Industrieel Erfgoed Nederland ontstond in 1984 als platform van een twintigtal organisaties. Inmiddels is het aantal organisaties dat zich in de federatie heeft verenigd opgelopen tot boven de zestig. Binnen dit heterogene, maar enthousiaste gezelschap bevinden zich lokale en regionale organisaties die zich op een bepaalde stad of een bepaalde streek richten, maar ook categoriale, die zich richten op schepen, trams, treinen, vliegtuigen etc.
